Identity. SS-31 (elamipretide, MTP-131) is the aromatic-cationic tetrapeptide D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2 that associates with cardiolipin on the inner mitochondrial membrane. In research (medical). Szeto/Birk and colleagues describe mitochondrial bioenergetics and disease-model work; clinical programs of elamipretide in mitochondrial and cardiorenal indications have been conducted. Not broadly FDA-approved as a general therapy; this listing is research material. In plain English. Scientists use SS-31 to study mitochondria -- the cell's power plants -- because it parks near a special fat (cardiolipin) inside those organelles.
